Born in Suffolk, Joan was educated at Milham Ford School, Oxford and graduated from Reading University with a degree in English/Philosophy. She later got a Diploma in Social Communications Media from Sophia College-Shree Basant Kumar Memorial Polytechnic in Bombay where she then taught the History of Journalism and supervised writing classes while publishing poetry and writing regular columns and commissioned articles for leading Bombay magazines. During her ten years in Bombay she also taught English, both privately and at the Japanese School.
Returning to the UK in the late eighties, Joan worked for seven years at Oxfam’s headquarters in Oxford as a Donor Liaison Officer and Events Organiser and visited Malawi as part of her work there. On retiring she trained and worked as an Advisor at the CAB.
She and her Parsi husband, whom she married in Bombay in 1959, now live quietly in Norfolk. They are keen theatre goers and gardeners and swim regularly. Joan plays the piano and Firdaus sings in a local choir. Joan is also in demand as a speaker at varied group meetings.
